1993 Mumbai blasts: Judgement against Abu Salem, 6 other culprits to be announced today


A Mumbai based special TADA court is all set announce its decision on Friday in the second trail over the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case indulging seven accused, involving gangster Abu Salem.

Due to the attack, about 257 people lost lives, 713 seriously wounded and shattered properties of worth Rs 27 crore.

In 2007 first trail, the TADA court detained 100 culprits, on the other hand, 23 people were released.

The accused were identified as Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Karimullah Khan, Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan, Riyaz Siddiqui, Tahir Merchant and Abdul Quayyum. As per the reports, they were alienated from the main case as they were detained at the time of end of the main trial.

Salem was blamed of transferring weapons from Gujarat to Mumbai.

As per the reports, Salem also sent the weapons to actor Sanjay Dutt, who was found involved in the case for unlawfully having weapons, AK 56 rifles, 250 bullets and some hand grenades at his home on January 16, 1993. Later, the accused went to Sanjay Dutt’s house on January 18, 1993 to get back two rifles.

The court had removed some charges put against Salem in 2013 after the probe agency CBI transferred a petition stating those blamed were against the exile agreement between India and Portugal.

In the first trail, accused Mustafa Dossa was found the masterminded of bomb explosion. He  was involved in the bomb explosion and he even directed the youth of Pakistan during that time to take arms training.

The court, in all, recorded statements of around 750 prosecution witnesses and 50 witnesses. Three accused including Salem confessed to their crime during investigations carried out by the CBI over the years in the blasts case.

The announcement of this case started in 2007 but it got late as three pleas were awaiting with the Supreme Court, one each lodged by Dossa and Salem, and another by CBI.

The trial started again in year 2012 and ended in March 2017.

The case (involving the seven accused) was first announced by judge Pramod Kode, who had also conveyed the decision in the first trial and blamed 100 culprits and released 23 in 2007.

Now, the hearing of case will be announced by judge G A Sanap.

In 2013, the Supreme Court announced a judgement on appeal lodged by all the culprits in which key plotter Yakub Memon’s death sentence was finalized. Other accused’s (all bomb planters) were given life imprisonment.

In 2013, Sanjay Dutt and several others give up before the TADA court after the apex court supported their conviction.

Yakub Memon was executed on July 30, 2015 after his few supplications looking for pardon were rejected, including the post-midnight hearing by Supreme Court on the day he was hanged.
